Luther’s House: Video and Some Quick History
Occupied even into the early 1960’s, this two room house was occupied by Luther, and his Mom, in east Texas. There was no running water or indoor plumbing and water was carried by bucket from a neighbors house until the well was in danger of going dry. When the neighbor wouldn’t allow water taken from the well, a nearby creek became the source.
Luther was to bring firewood up to the house for the stove every day. He would take a child’s wagon into the woods -load it, and pull it back to the house. He then cut it for use in heating, cooking, and washing clothes.
The family moved to Dallas, and the house was made a barn for storing feed for cattle. The house’s roof has since been skinned with metal, but the 2 room shack is pretty much the same as it was in those days; still a dirt floor, still drafty.
